Dogfish (Squalus acanthias)

Appearance: The Dogfish is grey above and white below. It is characteristic with its white spots, but occasionally it can appear without them. The two dorsal fins have each a large spine which contains poison. These can give painful wounds.

Dogfish is the most common shark specie in Norway. It is located at a depth of 10 - 200 metres, and can appear in big shoals. Dogfish are widespread on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and it feeds primarily on bony fish, but also molluscs, crustaceans and other invertebrates. Due to its late maturity, low reproductive capacity and longevity, it is particularly vulnerable to over fishing. This is the only species of horned sharks that can inflict toxins with its tail.
