Eel (Anguilla anguilla)

Appearance: The Eels body is worm look-alike, small and long. The back, tail and the fin form a continues dorsal fin. The thick and mucous skin also protects it from drying out.

The spawning of the Eels takes place during late winter and spring in the Sargasso Sea outside Florida. Then the leptocephali are brought by the Gulf Stream towards Europe. This can take up to three years, and they evolve into small Eels before moving into freshwater. At the end of their growth period, they become sexually mature (males: 6-12 years, females: 9-20 years), and migrate to the sea where they inhabit deep waters.
