Herring (Clupea Harengus)

Appearance: Herring is a slim, pelagic fish, with a short dorsal fin and without an indicated side line. The scale is not as sharp as the sprats, and the gills are smooth and slippery without radiated groove/ flute.

Herring can be divided into several different stocks or races with regard to size, growth, spawn period and pathway. The most important races in the East Atlantic are the winter-spawning Norwegian and Icelandic herrings, the autumn - spawning Icelandic and North Sea herrings, and the Baltic herrings. Every month is there at least one of these stocks that spawn.

The herrings schooling, silvery sides, excellent hearing and a very fast escape response act as anti - predator devices. This also enables them to "act the same" in a shoal that can consist of several thousand ton of herring at the same time. Herrings feed mainly on plankton.

During the early 70s the herring stock were almost eliminated, due to technological development and preservation regulation were introduced. Today there are quota restrictions on the Norwegian spring herring fishing. Herring fishing in the North Sea and Skagerrak is allowed all the year round.
