Wolf fish (Anarhichas lupus)

Appearance: Its ground colour is usually greyish-green, but almost black or reddish-brown other times. A Wolf fish has a body with 10-15 transverse, dark bars extended to the dorsal fn. Its teeth tears, and are every year prior to the spawn period being replaced. A Wolf fish has such a powerful jaw; it could chew an oar blade into splinters.

Wight max: Around ca. 20 kg

A Wolf fish is mainly to be found amongst seaweed on the stony sea bottom. However, during spawn it often swims up and around the board. Wolf fish is found all over the Norwegian coast. The spawn period is between November and February, at 40-200 metres depth. Despite its hideous look, it has a peaceful way of living. Wolf fish feed on hard-shelled molluscs, crabs, Lobster, sea urchins and other echinoderms.
